Recommendation:  Staff recommends Council adopt Resolution No. ________ and approve the request to allocate a Council Donation to The Children’s Cabinet in the total amount of $500.

Staff Report Formal Body

Summary: Councilmember Oscar Delgado would like to allocate $500 from Council Donation Funds assigned for Fiscal Year (FY) 17/18 to The Children’s Cabinet, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to support their various programs and services. Founded in 1985, The Children’s Cabinet has served countless families in need in our region.

Financial Implications:  Funds are budgeted for Council Donations.

Legal Implications:  NRS 268.028(1) states that the governing body of a city may make donations to nonprofit organizations created for religious, charitable or educational purposes to be used for a selected purpose. The donated funds must be used to provide a substantial benefit to the inhabitants of the city. Council approval is required before the recommended funds transfer can take place.

RESOLUTION DONATING COUNCIL DONATION FUNDS TO THE CHILDREN'S CABINET TO OFFSET COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR FAMILY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES IN THE AMOUNT OF $500. (GENERAL FUND)

 

WHEREAS, the City of Reno may donate funds in accordance with NRS 268.028, entitled “Expenditure of public money; grant of public money and donation of certain property to certain nonprofit organizations or governmental entities” when such expenditure provides a substantial benefit to the inhabitants of the City; and

WHEREAS, The Children's Cabinet, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been keeping children safe and families together through innovative responses and solutions to critical community needs since 1985; and,

WHEREAS, The Children’s Cabinet offers more than 30 programs and services for children and families, including crisis intervention and case management, academic support, tutoring, job training and transitional living, parenting classes, child care subsidies, child care resource and free family counseling; and,

WHEREAS, in 2017, The Children’s Cabinet has already helped more than 11,000 families and provided food pantry services to nearly 1,500 families; and,

WHEREAS, the Children’s Cabinet also provides the community avenues for the community to give back including the holiday Adopt A Family program and the Art of Childhood program; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Reno approves the donation of the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500) to The Children’s Cabinet to keep supporting those in need in our community; and,

                     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that should the above donation or any portion thereof not be used for the purpose as set forth in this Resolution, any unused funds shall be returned to the City of Reno.
