Recommendation:  Staff recommends Council adopt Resolution No. ________ and approve the request to allocate a Council Donation to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada in the amount of $500.

Staff Report Formal Body

Summary: Councilmember Oscar Delgado would like to allocate $500 from Council Donation Funds assigned for Fiscal Year (FY) 17/18 to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to support their mission to feed the hungry and solve hunger for tomorrow through community partnerships.

 

Financial Implications: Funds are budgeted for Council Donations in the General Fund.

 

Legal Implications: NRS 268.028(1) states that the governing body of a city may make donations to nonprofit organizations created for religious, charitable or educational purposes to be used for a selected purpose. The donated funds must be used to provide a substantial benefit to the inhabitants of the city. Council approval is required before the recommended funds transfer can take place.

Ordinance or Resolution

RESOLUTION DONATING COUNCIL DONATION FUNDS TO THE FOOD BANK OF NORTHERN NEVADA TO SUPPORT THEIR MISSION TO FEED THE HUNGRY AND SOLVE HUNGER FOR TOMORROW THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP IN THE AMOUNT OF $500. (GENERAL FUND)

 

WHEREAS, the City of Reno may donate funds in accordance with NRS 268.028, entitled “Expenditure of public money; grant of public money and donation of certain property to certain nonprofit organizations or governmental entities” when such expenditure provides a substantial benefit to the inhabitants of the City; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization,  provides emergency food services to community members who are hungry; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada distributes food boxes containing non-perishable and fresh food items to families, children and seniors in need; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada offers programs including the Back-Pack Kids programs, summer break meals, the Bridges to a Thriving Nevada Program and nutrition education programs with the purpose of empowering vulnerable populations; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada has worked in collaboration with more than 140 community partnerships to serve over 13.3 million meals to Nevadans with the goal of moving them from a place of hopelessness to health; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Reno approves the donation of the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500) to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to support their mission to feed the hungry and solve hunger for tomorrow through community partnership; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that should the above donation or any portion thereof not be used for the purpose as set forth in this Resolution, any unused funds shall be returned to the City of Reno.
