Summary: Councilmember Oscar Delgado would like to allocate $1,000 from Council Donation Funds assigned for Fiscal Year (FY) 17/18 to The First Tee of Northern Nevada, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to support its mission of enhancing youth development in the community through the game of golf.

 

Financial Implications:  Funds are budgeted for Council Donations in the General Fund.

 

Legal Implications: NRS 268.028(1) states that the governing body of a city may make donations to nonprofit organizations created for religious, charitable or educational purposes to be used for a selected purpose. The donated funds must be used to provide a substantial benefit to the inhabitants of the city. Council approval is required before the recommended funds transfer can take place.

Ordinance or Resolution

RESOLUTION DONATING COUNCIL DONATION FUNDS TO THE FIRST TEE OF NORTHERN NEVADA TO SUPPORT ITS MISSION OF ENHANCING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT IN THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THE GAME OF GOLF IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,000 (GENERAL FUND).

 

WHEREAS, the City of Reno may donate funds in accordance with NRS 268.028, entitled “Expenditure of public money, grant of public money and donation of certain property to certain nonprofit organizations or government entities” when such expenditure provides substantial benefit to the inhabitants of the City; and,

 

WHEREAS, The First Tee of Northern Nevada, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is equipping our community’s youth between the ages of 7 and 17 with essential life skills, including confidence, respect and honesty, to help them become successful as adults; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Northern Nevada Youth Golf Foundation was founded in 1998 to create a Chapter of the First Tee in Northern Nevada, thereby inspiring the formation of The First Tee of Northern Nevada in August 2005; and,

 

WHEREAS, The First Tee of Northern Nevada, through its Nine Core Values, provides a valuable service and helps our local young people achieve in their academics and athletics by promoting a passion for community service, self-purpose and family values through the game golf; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Reno approves the donation of the sum of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000) to The First Tee of Northern Nevada to support its mission of enhancing youth development in the community through the game of golf.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that should the above donation or any portion thereof not be used for the purpose as set forth in this Resolution, any unused funds shall be returned to the City of Reno.
